In this task, you must listen to an audio and answer the multiple choice question by picking the correct answer. The question displayed is normally related to the text's content or tone. The recording plays automatically and the prompt length is about 30–60 seconds.
Yes — Multiple Choice, Single Answer appears in both PTE Academic and PTE Core listening sections. The format remains the same across both versions of the test.
The correct answer carries one point, but you will score no points if the selected option is wrong. Crucially, unlike Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers, there is no negative marking — so you should never leave this question blank.
Listen for keywords and paraphrases in the audio — the correct answer is rarely a word-for-word match to what was said. The speaker might say "unemployment has increased significantly" while the correct option reads "it has led to job losses." Training yourself to recognise paraphrased meaning is the most critical skill for this task.
Since this section has no negative points, if you don't know the answer, take a random guess and move on to the next. It is better not to leave an answer blank — pick an option and, if time permits, recheck it to clear the doubt.
Rule out an option immediately if you can tell it is irrelevant or not mentioned in the audio. Pay attention to absolute words like "always" or "never" in options — they are often traps designed to mislead test-takers who aren't listening carefully.
