In 2016, my mother had a skin graft to treat a bad burn on her leg. I became very interested in how human tissue works. It was amazing to see skin from her thigh grow new blood vessels and join with the healthy skin around it. This made me wonder: Can we grow working human tissue in a lab? Now, nine years later, I am still trying to answer this question as a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). What my mother went through reminds me why I am doing this research. I think tissue bio-fabrication has the potential to change medicine and help us understand diseases better. Over time, my research has led to more questions: How can we grow tissue in the lab that acts more like real tissue and has the same structure? And can we use this lab-grown tissue in clinics? I plan to explore these questions as part of the PhD program in Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London.
The lab at Imperial College London is the ideal place for me to pursue my interests. Its research has greatly influenced my experimental methods. Inspired by the use of decellularised extracellular matrix bioinks for bioprinting, I want to use more biologically inspired materials in my tissue construction. I also believe my background in different research areas can broaden the lab's focus. Through a future project between my NIH lab and Imperial College London, I can use my experience in creating vascularized lung tissue for screening to help with lung disease models in their lab. I can be a connection between government and academic research, working toward a common goal. The work of Professor Rongjun Chen and Jerry Heng is especially interesting. Their models of heart tissue and tumours offer amazing chances to use tissue engineering to learn about complex diseases. Because of this, I see myself doing well at ICL. I am sure I can fit into current projects and also help grow ICL’s scientific work in tissue biofabrication.
I have spent almost six years learning the skills needed to succeed as a graduate student. During my time at IIT Madras, I spent four years on research, which brought me closer to tissue biofabrication. I started in Dr Talia al Ghul’s lab, where I spent a year using viruses and CRISPR/Cas9 to help inner ear cells grow back. My interest in CRISPR/Cas9 led me to Dr Dick Grayson’s lab to study disease modelling more. For two years, I created a CRISPR/Cas9 system to create Alzheimer s-like issues in stem cell-made neurons. This made me want to study how diseases develop in more complex lab systems. Because of this, I helped lead a project in Dr Barbara Gordon’s lab to create tumour spheroids and study gases to better understand how ovarian cancer works. Through my work as an undergraduate, I learned important skills in lab work and became more enthusiastic about science communication. This allowed me to get research grants and present six posters at conferences.
I first learned about tissue biofabrication research during an internship in Dr Harleen Quinzel’s 3D Tissue Bioprinting Lab, where I created 3D omentum tissue to model how ovarian cancer spreads. While past projects interested me, this one stood out, bringing back my original scientific goals and inspiring me to improve drug discovery platforms. This led me to accept a two-year position as a researcher in Dr Quinzel’s lab. There, I led three lung-focused projects. The first two, 2D and 3D lung models, were used to study viruses and screen COVID-19 drugs. The third involved working with GlaxoSmithKline to model and screen drugs for non-small cell lung cancer. My work has led to several poster presentations, a publication where I am the main author (in progress), and a second-author paper on the creation of 3D epithelial tissue on a microfluidics screening platform. My projects have helped me identify research questions, achieve experimental goals, solve issues, work with teams, and publish my work.
During my time at the NIH, I have worked hard to understand the problems with current lab platforms and the advantages of 3D vascularized tissues for disease modelling. Now, I want to learn new skills and address new scientific questions, which ICL is perfect for. I am excited about the chance to take classes with medical students and start new partnerships with doctors. This will provide the clinical understanding I want for my career. With my education, I plan to become a teacher, scientist, and biomedical engineering professor, running my own tissue biofabrication lab to create new medical technologies. I feel my years of hard work have prepared me well, and I am ready for the challenges at ICL.
