IELTS, the leading English language testing provider has issued a formal apology after discovering an unexpected technical glitch that has caused changes in the test results. Many test takers, who took the IELTS exam between August 2023 and September 2025, have been informed that their original Reading and Listening scores may have been incorrectly calculated, and updated results have now been released.

IELTS reported that the changes in scores were caused by a technical error in the scoring of certain Listening and Reading components in both the Academic and General Training formats.
The testing company also mentioned that 99% of its tests have remained unaffected during that time period and there are no issues with the current IELTS tests.
But many experts now believe, that the consequences for those impacted by this glitch could be significant. Especially for those who were heavily relying on IELTS scores for university admissions, employment, or immigration pathways.
IELTS confirmed that:
“We extend our sincere apologies to everyone impacted,” IELTS said in a statement. “We maintain strict quality control, and we have taken immediate steps to ensure such an issue cannot recur.”
Candidates are now seeing their band scores shift. For most the score has gone upwards and while for others it has downgraded. IELTS mentioned that the score adjustments are small, typically within a 0.5 band difference. However, experts warn that even minor changes can disrupt academic timelines or immigration applications.
Test Resources owner, Michael Goodine who closely follows developments in global English proficiency exams, says the situation underscores the huge responsibility which is carried by testing organisations.
“Some candidates may have missed out on career or academic opportunities because their original score was lower than it should have been,” Goodine explains. “For others, receiving a higher score initially might have set them up for difficulty in university courses requiring advanced English proficiency.”
He adds that applicants targeting strict visa or residency thresholds may face the most serious consequences:
“It could be too late for some individuals to rectify the impact on an immigration pathway or enrolment deadline. These decisions can change lives.”
IELTS has launched a dedicated assistance page with FAQs, instructions for accessing corrected results, and information for institutions that rely on IELTS band scores in admissions or hiring.

Lastly, IELTS also emphasised that the issue was internal, and it has now been fully investigated and resolved.
