The IELTS has four components: Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking. Each of them is scored separately on the band scale of 0-9. The overall IELTS band score is the arithmetic mean or the average of the four sections. These scores are then rounded off by using official rules.
The reading & listening section is scored in the same manner, by awarding one mark for each correct answer, out of a total of 40 questions. This total score is then converted into a band. However, a blank or an incorrect answer does not result in any negative marking.

The IELTS writing is scored using four different criteria that are weighted equally. These are: task achievement, coherence & cohesion, lexical resources, and grammatical range & accuracy.

The IELTS speaking is scored using four different criteria that are weighted equally. These are: fluency & coherence, lexical resources, Grammatical range & accuracy, and pronunciation. Each criterion receives a score from 0 to 9, and the final score is the average of these four.
IELTS Speaking Score Calculation Process
Understanding the way this exam awards marks is very important to succeed in the test. IELTS tests four important skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, each on a 9-band scale. While writing and speaking are assessed by detailed band descriptors, reading and listening depend on correct answers. The overall score is the average of all modules, rounded to the nearest half or whole band for accuracy and fairness. These are marks using the IELTS band score calculator, which is developed using official standards to ensure fair evaluation. A detailed breakdown of the scores can be seen below:
