Expert Tips to Improve Your Score

Learn proven strategies to organize your response, highlight key points, and improve fluency in the Describe Image task.

01

Use a Standard Template

Memorize a fixed structure (Introduction, Key Features,
Conclusion). Having a pre-set frame allows you to speak immediately without searching for words, which boosts your fluency score.

02

Focus on 3-4 Key Points

Don't try to describe everything. Select the
highest and lowest values, or the most obvious trends. Identifying just a few clear facts keeps your response organized.

03

Prioritize Fluency Over Accuracy

The AI values smooth, continuous speech more
than a perfect data analysis. If you misread a number or label, keep going; never pause or correct your mistakes.

04

Use Strategic "Filler" Keywords

If the image is complex, use generic
descriptors like "vertical axis," "horizontal axis," or "significant increase." These words keep you talking while the AI tracks your pronunciation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Describe Image questions appear in PTE Academic?

You will typically encounter 5–6 Describe Image questions in the Speaking section of PTE Academic, UKVI, and Core. Each presents a different type of visual. The task is the third speaking item in the section.

What types of images can appear in this task?

The image can be a bar graph, line graph, pie chart, table, map, process diagram, flowchart, Venn diagram, or a photo of objects, people, or landscapes. Practising with all types is essential, as each requires a slightly different approach.

How much time do I get to prepare and speak?

You have 25 seconds to study the image and prepare your response. After a short tone, the microphone opens and you have 40 seconds to speak. Aim to finish your response in around 35 seconds speaking past the time limit is not recorded, and finishing too early can hurt your score.

Can I pause or restart the recording?

No. Once the microphone opens, you must speak continuously for 40 seconds. You cannot pause, restart, or re-record your answer. If you stay silent for more than 3 seconds, the system may automatically stop recording so always keep talking even if you're uncertain.

Does Describe Image affect my Reading score too?

Yes. The Describe Image task indirectly contributes to both Speaking and Reading/content-related scores in PTE. Strong performance here can positively impact your overall communicative skills score, making it one of the higher-impact tasks to practise.

What structure should I follow when describing an image?

Introduction — Paraphrase the image title and state what it shows (e.g. "This bar chart illustrates…"). Key points — Pick 2–3 significant features: the highest/lowest values, major trends, or notable comparisons. For photos, describe the main subject and setting. Conclusion — Summarise the overall pattern, draw a logical inference, or make a brief prediction.
