Canada Brings in New ‘Student Work Policy’ from September 2024

Canada is set to implement new regulations governing the off-campus work hours for Indian students, aiming to strike a balance between academic focus and employment opportunities. The policy change, announced by Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration Refugees Citizenship, will see the end of the temporary limit for students to work more than 20 hours per week off campus on April 30, 2024. However, starting this September, international students in Canada will be allowed to work outside the campus for up to 24 hours per week.

Canada Revises Weekly Working Hours for International Students

Canada has once again changed the rules for international students. As per the latest announcement by Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller, international students can work off-campus for a maximum of 24 hours per week. This rule was brought into effect from Tuesday, May 1, 2024. However, in 2023, Canada has revised the work hour limits for international students which allowed them to work for 20 hours per week. This temporary policy has come to an end on April 30, 2024.

A significant number of international students in Canada hail from India. In 2022, 2.26 lakh students in Canada were from India, according to Canadian government data. And there were 3.2 lakh Indians staying in Canada on student visas, and also contributing in it’s economy. Moreover, the limit of 24 hours per week, which has been announced, is higher than the pre-pandemic limit of 20 hours, but lower than the anticipated limit of 30 hours per week.

As per recent studies, international students working more than 28 hours per week in the US and Canada have shown a decline in their academic performance. With this decline, the risk of students dropping out also increases. “Students must be in Canada for academic purposes. Meanwhile, allowing students to work up to 24 hours per week will ensure they focus primarily on their studies, while having the option to work, if necessary,” said Marc Miller, Minister of IRCC

Modifications in Post-graduation Work Permit Eligibility

Along with setting a cap on the working limits for international students, the Canadian government has also made some changes in Post-graduation work permit. It states that aspirants who will enroll in a college programme through a public-private curriculum arrangement on or after 15 May, 2024, will not be eligible for a post-graduate work permit in the country. However, the students who have enrolled and started their programme before 15 May will be eligible for a work permit only if they meet all required criteria listed by the government.
