Oxford University Admission: Complete Guide 2026

Oxford needs A-level or equivalent qualifications with applicants needing to meet course specific grade and subject requirements as well as any written work or admissions tests, UCAS application, personal statement and scholarly reference. 

Getting admission to Oxford University is exceptionally hard. In total Oxford has an average acceptance rate of just 14% to 15%. Furthermore for highly sought after courses including Medicine, Law and Computer Science, this rate can drop into the single digits. 

Oxford does not use GPA directly but for international qualifications it expect an average of 85% or above with scores of 8-9 in subjects specified at A-level or equivalent, which is roughly translates to a 3.8 to 4.0 US GPA.

Oxford accepts academic IELTS, not general training, TOEFL, iBT, Cambridge English C1 Advanced and C2 proficiency and the Oxford Test of English Advanced, all at the required level.  

The UCAS deadline is 6 pm UK time on 15 October which is obviously earlier than most UK colleges. Moreover the admission test registration deadlines fall even earlier before the UCAS deadline itself. 

Yes most of the UG courses need subject specific admission tests including MAT LNAT, TSA, BMAT, PAT, or HAT, completed before the interview stage and registered for ahead of the UCAS deadlines. 

For most courses, most of the shortlisted candidates are invited for two interviews with tutors from different colleges. The interview typically lasts 20-30 minutes which is structured as academic problem solving sessions instead of general conversations.

Oxford tutors look for students who have read globally in their subject beyond the required curriculum with personal statements. This includes particular books, papers or ideas demonstrating this along with strong grades and test scores.
