I have a habit of reading and now I have shifted to e-books. They are easy to carry and I can also read numerous number of books. However, the book which I cannot have enough of is “ The Murder of Roger Ackroyd” written by the famous British detective novelist, Agatha Christie.
Being an English Honours graduate, the best part about the course was we were allotted tons of novels to read and critically analyse. It was during my third year of college when I choose popular fiction over classical fiction that I read this particular novel by Agatha Christie.
The plot revolves around a murder and the author very carefully describes all if its characters. Thus, the book is a murder mystery, which keeps the reader on its feet with eventful surprises. The author makes sure that we consider of all of its characters as murders.
The protagonist of the novel is Hercule Poirot, who is a lead detective investigating the murder. The narrator of the story is Dr James Sheppard. The setting of the plot is in an English town. We are made to explore the crime through his eyes. Mr Ackroyd, who is wealthy is found dead in his chair in his study room with his own dagger. Moreover, footprints are found leading in and out of the study through an open window. The murder scene leaves the readers to suspect almost all of its characters.
Though that is not the exciting part. The most exciting part about the novel is that the murderer was none other than the author himself. On rereading the novel, one will find that DR Sheppard did leave a lot of hints for us to guess that he was the culprit. However, when I first read it I felt cheated as a reader. Nonetheless, on reading I still have a laugh about the narrator’s intelligence and of course, the novelist who wrote this wonderful masterpiece.
