PhD Programmes in United Kingdom

Identify a supervisor and research topic, write a research proposal, and apply directly to the university or through a funded studentship. Most applicants need a 2:1 bachelor's plus a relevant master's degree.

Apply for UKRI, Gates Cambridge, Rhodes, Chevening, or university-specific studentships, which cover tuition and a living stipend. Competition is fierce, so a strong research proposal and academic record matter most.

UK PhDs are typically shorter than in many other countries, usually taking 3 to 4 years full-time with minimal coursework, since students focus on independent research from the very start.

You will generally need a 2:1 bachelor's degree plus a relevant master's, a well-developed research proposal, strong references, and an English score, along with a supervisor willing to support your project.

Funded PhD students typically receive a UKRI-aligned stipend around £20,000–£27,000 a year, tax-free, intended to cover living costs rather than function as a full salary during the research period.
